Weird. The body horror was pretty good tho, the plot was kinda all over the place but I kinda want a book 2?

I quite enjoyed this book and the story that it is weaving. It is definitely intense though, but since I enjoy a good gorey body horror story this was perfect for me.

I wanted to give a list of trigger warnings first, because this book definitely needs it.
Major trigger warnings (aka this will occur throughout the book): Pandemic, Gore, Body Horror, Medical Trauma, Non-Consensual Surgeries, sexual content. There's also one (unsuccessful) suicide attempt, pregnancy related body horror, cancer as well as a really flippant and insensitive remark about Jeffrey Dahmer's victims by one of the POV characters. Sexual assault is mentioned, but does not play a real role in the story, but the body horror related to pregnancy might be uncomfortable for some people in that regard as well.

As the summary says we follow three women through a global pandemic. Shortly after her boyfriend proposed to her, Erin starts feeling really sick and has to go to the hospital. Her illness will change her life forever. Her story line was really interesting to me and I think it makes a great introduction to this world. She goes from a woman who is trying desperately to hold onto normalcy to someone who is shunned from society and finally someone who finds love with another "freak" like herself. Savannah's descent into madness is quite a bit faster than Erin's and she really revels in the violent aspects of the story (she quite literally gets off on it) and I think her part is where the story really starts to spiral into something a lot weirder than your average zombie rage virus, which is how it started out with Erin. Since I like sci-fi weirdness, I really enjoyed it and I have to say I enjoyed the story more once we got into the seriously weird territory. Last we meet Mareva, who has had unexplained growths on her body forever, but with this apocalypse they become something a lot more scary. As the virus keeps evolving and changing, so does her body and the story draws to its apocalyptic end. If you want to enjoy ALL of this book, you will have to lean into the surreal horror aspects, especially at this point, but as the story escalates more and more with each perspective I think it works quite well.

If you like women committing crimes, body horror, gore, eldritch masters, a brutal mix of horror and sci fi AND you can stomach another book about a global pandemic, I think you'll like this book :) Also there's bisexual women in this book & that's always a bonus (Happy pride!)

Sister, Maiden, Monster is a gory and unsettling tale exploring the nightmarish means that humanity will go to save itself. This book is equal parts a wtf did I just read, wild disgusting ride and a stellar commentary on the terrors of surveillance and control that feel all too real in today’s world.

Major trigger warnings for graphic gore, body horror and cannibalism. Be aware that there is also a brief reference to a grown man grooming and ‘dating’ a teenager. See further trigger warnings below.

If I had a nickel for every piece of media I've consumed that in which at some point characters have gay sex and then merge their bodies together in a grotesque ritual in the name of an other-worldly power, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it's happened twice.

The best descriptor of this book is, in my opinion, the lesbian urge to drink the blood of and devour the flesh of your lover.

3.5 stars, it was horny and I appreciate that in my horror.

I thought this was going to be some sort of cosmic sci-fi horror book I didn’t realize it was going to straight up be smut. I guess the writing was okay but I would like to un-read that. I thought it would get better in the end because some reviews I looked up (after realizing this book was probably not what I thought it was) said after the first weird sex scene it turns more horror-esque but it didn’t. Would not recommend.
