Fascinating historic fiction set in Maine about a midwife entangled in a mystery. Inspired by a true story.

I was surprised to learn how many historical facts Ms. Lawhon used for this novel. That's my idea of a true historical fiction. So many "historical fictions" these days may be set in (for example) WWII but other than a brief mention, there is NOTHING factual about the characters and events. Not true with this one. It is based on a real life midwife in the early days of America wrapped around a fictional murder but a real life rape. The only reason we know of these events today is because the midwife, Martha Ballard, kept a daily journal that was passed on through the ages.
Intriguing story line that kept me engaged throughout. I especially loved Martha's relationship with her husband - it was a nice touch.

Couldn’t quite give it 5 stars because it was really slow and hard to get into the beginning for me.
But once it picked up I couldn’t put it down! Especially once I found out it is based on a real person and her diary! This book has left a lasting impression and a reminder of how far women have come, and how similar our society still is to that of the 1700s. Really cool (and frustrating) to read about the justice system when our country was so young. So thankful her story lives on when it would’ve been erased by history.

Beautifully written. Extremely intense at certain parts. An engaging murder mystery with a strong female main character.
