Way better than I thought it would be. I enjoyed watching these female characters grow.

The cover immediately caught my attention because it reminded me of a scene in Pretty Little Liars… and to my surprise, when I picked it up, the description literally said “Pretty Little Liars meets People Like Us”, so OF COURSE I had to grab it!

I’ve heard of this author before but had never read any of her books, so I was excited to finally read this. I had SO many questions throughout it all, and it did keep me on edge for the most part… although I will admit, there was SO much teen drama lol.

The twist at the end was unexpected, but at the same time, I wasn’t too shook by it. In fact, I’m still not too sure how I feel about it LOL. Overall, it was an interesting read, and it was definitely easy to get through!

Looking forward to read more from this author!

This is a fun YA thriller with deeper themes. It has two FMCs, whose stories intertwine, with two angles on the pressure parents can put on their children to play certain roles. A sapphic plot with a narrative on relgious rejection of homosexuality and conversion camps. And a storyline about living up to expectations and saving the family from social and financial ruin. The book signposts readers to places that can offer advice and support if you are suffering from being forced to change your sexual orientation or being thrown out due to their orientation or gender identity and lists the impact that this can have on individuals.

! tw: for homophobia, conversion therapy & religious trauma in this book !

I get so tired of people using really popular books like Pretty Little Liars, Harry Potter, Six of Crows, etc. then base every single book in that genre on that book and then whenever a book isn’t *slightly* as good, they rip it apart.

It’s pathetic.

So many reviews are like “PLL copycat” “not as good as PLL”. PLL did not even thrillers or teenage drama gone too far. Get a grip.

This book was actually quite good. The characters are complicated, some are shallow and some selfless. They all have at least some depth. The plot was entriguing, the plot twist was surprising. It kept me excited, on the edge of my seat.

It was complex, thrilling. I overall really enjoyed it all the way to the end. Recommended.

Plus, as a WV native, it’s always awesome (yet weird) for our little state to be mentioned in literature or films as it’s frequently overlooked! :D
