A love letter to Sendak's "In the Night Kitchen", but reimagined in the context of a dim sum palace. The tasty illustrations left me hungry for more! -SKB

This book joins those picture books that feature dream sequences in a fun and food celebration themed way. Liddy is excited about the next day's trip to Dim Sum Palace, and her dreams reflect that, including a mishap where she ends up in a dumpling and almost gets eaten by an empress, but ends up safe in bed, ready for her adventure to the actual (very different, but still delicious) Dim Sum Palace.

I may come back and bump this one up. Cute illustrations and story. I love the nod to In the Night Kitchen. I also love the waking dream the little girl has.
ETA: Yep, I came back. The anticipation of the little girl’s going-out-to-eat treat mixed with the wild dream state is captured so well. The wispiness of the art, echoing otherworldliness of dreamland… perfection.

The night before Liddy visits the Dim Sum Palace with her family she tries to imagine what will take place. "Will there be an empress?" As she drifts off into sleep she follows a wonderful smell into the kitchen of a gigantic palace where she climbs across the countertops and falls into some dumpling filling. The illustrations are full of charm and magic, as Liddy gets mixed into a whimsical adventure. This is an excellent picture book to share with young food-lovers, especially those who appreciate Asian cuisine.
