I received a copy of Dim Sum Palace by X. Fang from Tundra Books in exchange for an honest review.

Liddy is excited and cannot sleep as she is going for dim sum the next day with her family. The Dim Sum Palace must be a real palace with an empress, Liddy is convinced. And soon she is lured out of her bed in a dream that takes her to a palace filled with amazing smells, and gigantic dim sum foods, and even an empress to boot. But soon Liddy finds herself awoken from her dreams and when she goes to the Dim Sum Palace - it's not a palace - and there's no empresses in sight. But the dim sum is absolutely delicious.

What a fun story about going for dim sum and the anticipation of having a delicious meal with one's family. I grew up with weekly visits to the dim sum restaurants and this was such a fun way to revisit those memories. The illustrations and story in Dim Sum Palace are so funny and scrumptious - though perhaps not with Liddy wrapped in the dumpling. What a beautiful love letter in the form of a picture book to dim sum.

This book was really fun. Child is going on adventure tomorrow to the dim sum palace. They have never been and they dream at night of going to this palace and getting stuck in the food and becoming dinner. The real palace is nothing like their dreams but the food is even better.

A big thank-you to NetGalley, the author, and publisher for giving me a copy of this book for an unbiased review.

2/5 - It was okay.

I love reviewing children's books which have a multicultural interest and vibrant illustrations, which is why I gravitated towards this one. Unfortunately, I found it disappointing for the following reasons:

- The story had no central narrative or conflict. Without giving any spoilers away, I'll just say that nothing much really happens in this book. There is no challenge that the protagonist overcomes, no lesson learned, no exploration of the world around them.

- The illustrations, whilst vibrant on the cover and inner pages, are not as vibrant or detailed through the story

- Other than the mention of dim sum, there is no exploration of a different culture which feels shallow in its representation

I did think the illustrations were cute, so for this I give it two stars.
