I love Quinta so much as a comedian but this was not the best. It just didn’t flow well. Between her life stories and success. This felt like a chore to finish.

I decided to read this after learning about it in Quinta’s interview on Hot Ones. I enjoyed reading this book: the tone and writing style was very approachable throughout, no matter the topic of discussion. these essays focused more on her childhood, early career, and her time at Buzzfeed with not much discussion on her work after leaving the company—the book ends with an essay set during the pandemic. I would’ve liked to know more about A Black Lady Sketch Show and her time between leaving Buzzfeed and starting Abbott Elementary

I really admire Quinta and this memoir had nuggets that I also related to.

A great memoir/essay collection. Fun and readable, like listening to a friend (a cliche thing to say, but I really mean it), while also honest and full of insightful and funny quotes I want to copy and tape up on my wall. As someone around the same age, it’s nice to hear a story of someone who also grew up on the internet (and with the same memes), and who used that to propel them forward toward their goals. The book only runs through 2020, before Abbott Elementary started in 2021, and I hope to see a “part 2” of this book in a few decades, building on everything she’s achieved since then.

Overall just a really enjoyable read.

I find Quinta Brunson a joy to watch as a comedian and thoroughly enjoyed this memoir -both for the specifics of her Philly upbringing and her development as a sketch and internet comedian (as well as her shoutout to Second City improv classes).
