I don't know what it says that I totally forgot that I had read this book back in 2013. (Or at least I rated it then!) I found it good, not great, both times I read it. :-) My biggest problem with the book is that the bad guy doesn't stay defeated... sigh... I enjoyed it more the third time I listened to it, this time with my kid as our car book. Good audio book for listening in the car!

I've read this book before and loved it then. This is my first time going through the audiobook book, and I still love it. This whole series is just so charming and so heartwarming. I decided to give the books to my nephews and niece because I want them to have a chance to fall in love with this series as I did. While the first book of the series was more enjoyable, this book still holds up and holds a special place in my heart. I'm so happy I can revisit the series after all this time, and can't wait to talk to my nephew about Septimus Heap and his adventures.

I really liked this book. I hate how Marcia is being followed by a Shadow. I hate Simon and the bitterness he has. I hate how he kidnapps Jenna and takes her away and is so mean to her. I love how she figures out how toescape and how she outsmarts him and finds Wolf boy and Septimus. I love how Wolf boy ends up being Septimus's old friend from the army. I love how they figure out how to get rid of Marcia's shadow and howthey figure out how to get Dom Daniel out of the way. I love how Aunt Zelda is taking care of the apprentience and how kinds she is to him. I really liked this book. 5 stars.

This second book of the septimus heap series was super good. Of course, like happened in the Harry Potter books, the main character has so many things that happen at just the right time to him as the unsuspecting character. The unknown parts of the castle, the perfect good friends in the right places, and the help he has from ghosts, new found family and strangers is unreal but awesome. I think that the author does a great job with the rhythm of the book. I usually don't like stories where an author has to follow the story with many different character in different locations. Usually it just gets to the point where there are too many threads all separating the author can't keep up with them. However, this author does a great job bringing the story back to one story line at just the right time and doesn't overdue the separate stories. I feel bad for Simon, but in his anger, he made his choices. The retina ship between Septimus and Jenna is endearing. The authors last chapter of background in all the random characters we meet in the book is awesome! I can't get over how much I enjoy that at the end.
