Damn. Women really are born with pain built in! This should be a required reading for everyone who wants to know how a culture of misogyny permeates every single phase of any woman's life. The ending was especially eerie, too, because
I was expecting the book to end on a relatively happy note, but instead we end up with a chapter from her male therapist's point of view where his own offhand comments contributed to all the oppressive experiences Jiyoung and every women had—and has—to go through.
We are all Kim Jiyoung.

The ending of this book was so infuriating but the more I thought about it, the more I realised that this is such a good depiction of misogyny. Some people will see the problems right in front of their face but still not be able to realise that they are an active part of the issue.

Such an insightful book, I devoured it within a day. I already have a passion for translated fiction and this has definitely part of the reason why.

[Book club - June 2022]

Very good, but more importantly, very important. Didn't really teach me anything I didn't know already, but it does an absolutely fantastic job of putting it all in context and showing how small things lead to other small things that become big things that become structural, systemic discrimination. I also especially enjoyed the statistics. I wish every (especially older) man in my life would read this.

hm mixed feelings about this one. while i understand the impact it's had the book didn't actually work as novel. the statistics thrown in randomly, the genuinely interesting premise that was never built on, the overall translation all failed to make this work. whether all of this was lazy writing or authorial intent (working off the psychiatrist's pov) is not a question I'm ultimately bothered about.
