I’m sure that this is a great book but 100 minutes into the audiobook I was bored

this was so well written, the sentences so beautiful. her storytelling is amazing. although this took me ages to read, when I did read it I just wanted to keep reading. every chapter is its own little story of her early life, each one showing something about her and her community and her life as a young black girl in the south in the 1930s. full of the most well written concise but beautifully put lines, very honest, very awful to read at times, other times very hopeful and humorous. I just think this is a perfectly constructed book with each chapter being clearly a pivotal important moment in her growing up, big and small. she writes through her childhood self's voice so well, it captures her personality and everything so well. wonderful book!

I loved this book. it's a sampling bar of experiences, thoughts and sensations of a childhood completely alien to my own. I saw a world stark with color and vivid with subtext. Beautiful.
