I liked this book better than the first, but it still had it's issues. I got tired of knowing the truth when the characters react to the partial truths that they know. Once is enough, anything more than that is too much. The characters also started to get on my nerves after awhile. They all seemed so whiny. But, there was just enough of a cliff hanger that I want to know what happens next.

I loved the book and like always, Weeks ends it with a great cliffhanger that leaves readers wanting for more. Can’t wait for the next book!!!

Much better than his Night Angel series. Almost gave up on this author after that.
The magic system isn't one of my favorites, but different enough to make it interesting.
The characters don't have a lot of depth but are interesting enough.
The story is pretty decent and follows many characters, although first person narrative is limited to maybe five of them. The plot feels a little contrived, but not too bad.
I give this series (yes, this review is for the series) 4 stars mostly because the story is gripping and keeps me entertained.

This is an amazing read. I really love this series. The worldbuilding is great, some actions surprise me even though those actions are still logical from the character's point of view. The whole magic system is amazing and I really love the characters. They are showing growth and emotion and make some good and some bad decisions. They feel real. This world feels real and I am gonna stop writing and move on in book 3.

This one is getting better. Weeks' writing has matured somewhat since the first book, and you get the sense that his eye for the viscera and brutality of violence and combat is driven less by some inherent sadism and more to build a world where life is cheap and therefore evermore precious. I didn't remember some of the twists and turns from my original read in 2013, and I'm definitely going to read the rest of the series; the magic and the lore is intriguing and compelling enough, and the characterisation has grown from its original grimdark roots in book 1.

Holy moly. That was an amazing ending! The book did take a while to get me interested. I was not interested in Gavin’s flirtations with the Seer. Bleh. Also, the focus on breasts seemed to annoy me more in the beginning of this novel than in the previous for some reason. However, once Gavin returned to Big Jasper, things got better. The pace picked up and rose to a crescendo in a gutt-wrenching, nerve-racking, action-packed climax. I am eager to start the next novel and can’t wait to discover what will become of Gavin and Kip and what twisted plans Andross has in store for them.
