This was pitched to me as a magical dark academia with Yales secret societies and while that is true I don’t think it does it justice. At its core it’s a murder mystery within the magic community of secret societies at Yale. The magic is so well done and both cozy and dark.

I have my issues with this but I think what was well done over shadows them <spoiler/>

I'll admit that the first half of this book was a pretentious slog with little flavour however due to my interest in the premise I persevered. The second half however really picked up and the characters personalities began to shine through more and the magic-infused murder mystery really kicked off.

I look forward to seeing how this ends.

I am late to this one. I absolutely loved it! It is a slow burn murder mystery. Slow burn with magic realism, brutal dark academia... It was amazing. Leigh Bardugo as absolutely soared to the top of my favorite authors with this one.

Alex Stern has always been able to see the "quiet ones". People who are dead, and no one else can see. Not being able to explain this to others has plagued her life. Now at university she finally is around people who understand her, but they are using her for her skills. Her mentor had disappeared and she is on her own trying to solve a murder...

A tightly written, absorbing fantasy with a troubling core. Kind of like Bardugo's Yale.

It was executed really well, but it felt like so many of the plot points hinged on women being assaulted only for that to not connect to the conclusion in a significant way. It was a beautifully executed new world from an obviously talented author but I cannot recommend it easily to anyone because it felt so vicious and hopeless in that way.

Such a rich story, and I can't wait for the sequel! I almost wish I had done some research ahead of reading and waited until the sequel had been released—don't want to wait another six months! I was totally hooked on the world and the mystery at the center of the book, and the more I learned of Alex's backstory, the more I came to care for her. Highly recommend for fans of urban fantasy and gritty murder mysteries.

I listened to it and really enjoyed it. READ THE CONTENT WARNINGS. It doesnt hold back so go in prepared. The main character is very complex and does some wild things.
