I think that brief review + the A** sums up how much I loved this book. I hadn't heard anything about this book before I read it. It was in randomly in the Amazon store on the Kindle, and I really liked the book cover, and the synopsis seemed interesting. It was really strange that I decided to pick this up so quickly, because usually if I find an interesting looking book on Amazon, I will buy or sample it, and then put it in one of my collections to read later. But this book was almost drawing me to, so I read the sample. And then I was hooked! There was no going back after that. I loved the beginning, and the way it introduced what kind of book it was. I loved the mythology behind the world and the magic system, and how it had this really beautifully subtle religious aspect.
I have too much to say, and too many amazing and still very raw feelings, so I'm gonna keep it brief.
This book was so perfect and beautiful in literally every way! The writing was so extraordinarily beautiful (I'm going to use that word a lot), the world was beautiful, and the characters were amazing.
I know that the pacing of a book is good, when I'm not constantly looking for it to end, and I know that an end is good when I don't want it to end. I loved Lark (female protagonist), because i really saw myself in her, and saw her in me. She was so strong and brave and loving, and reacted how I would imagine reacting in most of those situations. I loved King Tiras, and the romance between them soo much. I honestly think that had one of my favourite romances of all time (so far, anyway).
I laughed in this book, and I cried in the book. The story and the words and the atmosphere felt so cool and refreshing (I could honestly compare it to a cool breeze or swim in cool water). This book was about freedom, and it made me feel so free!! It was so utterly and extraordinarily unique. I have never read anything like it, and don't think I ever will.
This book definitely reminded me of Howl's Moving Castle, A Court of Thornes and Roses, and Angelfall, with a bit of Trial by Fire, while still being beautifully unique.
It was exactly what I needed at the time, and it was beautifully perfect, and perfectly beautiful from beginning to end, and I can happily say that it is now one of my favourite books of all time, and will definitely read it again.

Super predictable, shallow dumb characters with shallow dumb motivations. I was going to stop at about 50% of the novel, but I forced myself to finish it.
If I had to describe this book with one word, it would be enchanting. I was completely under its spell from the first page to the last, and I couldn't put it down. It's almost like a fairy tale which teaches us the power of words and the power of love. I highly recommend this book! It's simply beautiful.
3.5 stars rounded up. I am very torn about this novel. I can't honestly say I liked this novel because I liked the novel or if I liked the familiarity of the novel. This reminds me heavily of two other stories that I love. One a novel by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes called "Hawksong" and a short story called "Born of the Night" by Lori Handeland (this one was especially eerily similar it's in the short story compilation called "Stroke of Midnight" if anyone wants to read it). So the romance was familiar and I was comfortable with most of its progression, though at times I was not a fan of the way Tiras spoke to Lark. I think there were just pieces missing where we could have built more romantic tension elsewhere, but this still really held my interest.
The beginning, admittedly, needed a lot of help. There were chapters that moved far too fast instead of giving us a chance to get grounded into the scenery or the characters. Lark was literally whisked off her feet very quickly into an unknown land before we really got to learn the one she grew up in. So while this book found its stride there was a pattern of good chapter, bad chapter, good chapter, bad chapter, good chapter, good chapter.
The ending of the novel was a little rushed and not very satisfying to me. The action was kind of hard to follow and rules that had been established were suddenly no longer applicable. Lark did not collapse at all even when wounded and weaving far more word spells than she ever had before. I knew who was in control of the Volgar, but that conflict took a long backseat in this novel.
I would recommend this novel. I am unsure, however, whether I would pick up its sequel

This is a precious little love story. Definitely suited for those who love a good romance novel without smut/spiciness. Has some battles but the author refrains from describing the gore too much; writing these scenes with kid gloves on (but does not take away from the scene). This book is beautifully written. Not AS poetic as Madeline Miller but pretty darn close. I really appreciated, and enjoyed, the complexity of the plot. It was clearly, in my opinion, thoughtfully planned and artfully executed.
This book is about 70% fantasy and 30% romance and I would describe it as Game of Thrones meets Avatar: The Last Air Bender but made by the Hallmark Channel.
I had some qualms with the character development of one of the principle characters. They would do some things, learn a lesson, and become more mature/lesson learned for awhile. But the author would revert them back to their old ways to just make a scene longer or because their immature reaction just seemed more entertaining for the scene. The character converting back and forth just didn't seem genuine; even for a character described in their early 20s. So I took one star away for that reason.
