Started out with promise, and then turned into complete drivel. Plot holes as far as the eye can see, a completely weak main character with hollow nods towards feminism, and terrible writing. So much of the plot was pushed forward through mundane dialogue, which is ironic considering the main character started out mute. One of the things an author should do for the reader is to show progression, don't just tell the reader what is happening. I'm embarrassed this is a Goodreads top read.
I didn't like this one as much as I thought I would! The magic system was intriguing, but I would've liked to see it expanded more. Mostly though, the lower rating is because of the disappointing relationship between Lark and Tiras. To be quite honest, I thought Tiras was a horrible, manipulative person, and it is a mystery to me how Lark could ever fall in love with him. I could see Harmon trying to justify Tiras' actions, but I still find him utterly despicable.

This was a good read. I enjoyed it and enjoyed the characters and their development. I look forward to the next one. I hope this writer has more romantasy works.
It started very strong but didn't hold up for me. If you write about someone becoming an eagle, I want to know about the problems and benefits of that. Not just that it's great to soar and eating mice is a little disgusting. I also couldn't buy the premise that magical talents would ever be outlawed and the talented killed rather than be used by those in power or to gain power.

I have mixed feelings about this. It wasn’t bad but it felt underdeveloped. I enjoyed the plot and characters but the actual writing and world building made this feel like a good draft that would be enriched with more detail and depth.
This reminded me a lot of Bardugo's Grisha series. I liked it well enough, but some things annoyed me. First was the helplessness of Lark. Second was the whole falling-in-love-with-your-captor trope. Third was the annoying rhyming couplet spells. Aside from that, though, it was a pretty good book with a relatively interesting story.
