i’m prepared to accept that my opinion on this might change based on the revelations that will doubtless emerge in the final installment. HOWEVER: currently i’m feeling like this whole book could have been bypassed entirely. my anti-natalist leanings mean i rlly struggle to care about the pregnancy storyline and if this had been ditched most of this book could have ended up on the cutting room floor. (interesting that ‘wind in the keyhole’ was a .5 addition but that felt more worthy of its place than this)
one of king’s flaws in my humble opinion is his seemingly very light hand when it comes to editing (‘it’ is another example of king that needed some editing shears to streamline it) and this was another example for me. i don’t feel like this book really DID anything for the plot (or fun and background culture like ‘wind in the keyhole’ did) so whilst it was fun to read - as per - i’m keen to see the back of it and get back to the nitty gritty.

Not bad, not bad. Things actually happened, the plot actually progressed. Only one book left~
Stephen King made more than a cameo this time--he was a major plot point. I'm so glad I read "On Writing" before this (purely a coincidence), I understood a lot more of the references (and his whole ending coda). I was annoyed at this cameo, though, at first (what kind of cocky bastard puts himself in his own book?), but...it grew on me, I guess. They are all apparently in the true world now, the only universe out of them all that is actually real, and...it is a world where Stephen King got hit by that van and actually died. Which means...our world is not the true world O___O
I liked that the characters were all split up. And I liked that they got the fuck out of that Calla place, finally. No more filler.
This book ended on a cliffhanger, though. Mia's chap has been born and all hell is going to break loose. Fuck. Though, I believe this book and the next one were released around the same time, so I guess no one was forced to wait before reading the next one.
Also, Stephen King is dead so absolutely anything can happen in book 7.

Books 3 and 4 are definitely the highlight of this series, but that's not to say the last couple aren't enjoyable... Just less immersive perhaps. I thought it would descend downhill when Stephen King added himself into the narrative, but I actually didn't hate it. I do think I would have liked more of Mia's mythology explored (or just more of everything as this book was relatively short compared to its predecessors) but nonetheless- another step closer to the Dark Towers conclusion, and I am not ready to say goodbye.
I can understand why people don’t like this book. I can understand why there are complaints about this series. I can understand them but it doesn’t mean I have to share them. The story is very unusual, the path is crooked and turns unexpectedly. I can’t wait to walk through the final door and read the final chapter.
