A great queer horror story

Character ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

One thing I loved about this book was the variety of different perspectives that you are presented with: contestants, producers and even the general public discussing the show. It is also presented in an interesting way with forums, blog posts and letters scattered among normal first person chapters.
I do kind of hate all the characters in different ways but I get the feeling that they are not supposed to be lovable characters, but rather the self-centred, ambitious and fame hungry people who you expect on a reality dating show

Plot ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I think the pace feels a little slow to begin with but really ramps up at around the half way mark and the last quarter is wild! Definitely an interesting concept and as someone who loves old school reality tv it was great to see behind the scenes of this The Batchelor reimagining.  I was confused early on why I found this book in a LGBTQ+ bookshop, being based on a hetero dating show but as the book progresses I can see it totally belonged. I did kind of see the ending coming but it well surpassed my expectations! I think this book would make an amazing horror movie in the vein of Midsomer with a hint of Hot Fuzz small town vibes.

Overall ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What really drew me to this book of the shelves was the name and cover with the embossed splattered blood. I know you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover but I did and I don’t regret it! The characters were almost universally unlikeable but very well written by the author and the plot was great/brutal fun!

Would recommend it to horror fans and doubly to fans of both horror and queer books!

The Batchelor meets slasher film with Big Foot and her lesbian following. Completely wild and I want more!

picked up patricia because i wanted to read the book the cover blurbs were raving about. i still want to read that book. this is not that book.

self-indulgent and dragging first and second acts are so caught up in the characters, complexes, and institutions they're lampooning that they end up almost as vapid and certainly as weightless. satire requires clarity of purpose and target etc etc

was originally going to give this a 2.5, but a satisfying—if unearned, and unsubstantiated—third act brought it up a bit.

ultimately, i can't help but feel like this is a book that's begging to get picked up for a movie deal, which would probably be the best fate for it. it'd certainly make a better (clearer, better constructed, more precise) movie than it does a novel.

This was fun, but not as exciting as it’s made out to be. It’s more of a comical unpacking of reality television than a lesbian horror romcom.
