I am normally not a crime reader, but I considered myself lucky that somebody left this book at the vacation house I am staying at. Because I’ve read all my vacation-books and can’t buy more as I’ve run out of space in my bags for the flight home.
*I know I could have bought a book and left it at the vacation house, but buying a book and not putting it on my bookshelves at home breaks my heart. It’s a reader thing. Or maybe just a me thing.
Onwards to the book. The book starts with a murder, but it’s not a classic can you guess who did it. This book is more along the lines off: ‘I’ll give you a new puzzle piece every now and then and enjoy the read about how they all go together’. I liked the way the story was crafted. Some parts at the end felt a bit rushed. 3/4 of the book is set up and then one big thing after another happens, almost like a check list.I would have liked the clues to the code to be more work. All in one place seemed too easy. Also the end location seemed like you could get there without the code.

I know to expect a complex plot with twists, turns and reveals with Baldacci and Simply Lies was no exception.
This is the first in the Mickey Gibson series and I'm looking forward to exploring the rest. Mickey is a former detective who, for reasons she would rather put behind her, is now working for ProEye, a global investigation company. She works online tracking the hidden assets of criminals. The work suits her as she has two young kids to raise.
She gets a call to check out what's left in an old mansion, thinking the work is from ProEye, but no, Mickey is being manipulated by a woman with many aliases. She gets to the mansion, discovers a dead body and from there the plot weaves its way through links to the mob, child trafficking and abuse, drugs and corruption.
Mickey does not want to be involved but threats are being made to her kids and her family - she has no choice but to dive in and try to work out what is going on.
Who can she trust? Can she protect her family? Will she untangle the web of lies to uncover the killer and the hint of a hidden mob fortune?
Definitely a good read.
