Disturbing, unusual, surprising. I didn't LOVE this but liked it. Some of the most affecting gore and horror I've read in awhile. Avoided predictable character beats and went in other more interesting directions instead.

My favorite thing about this book is the pacing. Long chapters that bounce around in time and weave the story together, allowing the reader to arrive at understanding rather than just explaining everything upfront. Please read this book. It sticks with you.
I really wanted to love this book. But in the end, it felt quite disappointing. The story starts of slow, with lots of hints that something bigger is at play. Then, during the middle part, the book is actually amazing. Lots of interesting stuff happens, and we also get plenty of explanation for the previously unclear stuff. So far, so good.
The problem is what happens afterwards. After the horror-prone elements of the middle part, the book takes a turn in that it stops being invested in the mystery, and instead turns to the character‘s way to deal with the events of the middle. The point where this turn breaks down is the ending. It‘s as if Enriquez had suddenly remembered that this needs to include horror; several narrative arks just get dropped out if nowhere, something gruesome happens and we‘re back to horror-mystery world. Only that this time around, we do not learn anything new about this world, we don‘t receive any closure for previous questions. We get a rushed 25 pages of how the big bads are taken down; apparently it was quite easy and could have been done decades ago.
It is quite an achievement to write a book of almost 730 pages (which feels way too long at times) and then still rush the ending so much. The result of this is that neither the mystery/horror elements, nor the more personal parts of the narrative receive a kind of closure that is satisfying or even logical. There are many elements in here that I really, really love. But it just feels like something of the overall vision of the book got lost along the way. A real pity.
