Fantastic collection of essays about what it means to be transgendered/genderqueer. Something everyone should read.

Especially recommend this book to folx in the process of exploring their gender; you'll find some stories that you relate to and others that are not anything like your own experience but are still cool. I definitely really enjoyed the mixed format of the book, though it makes it a little hard to read the book on an e-reader. While I'm usually slightly wary of reading gender literature that's more than a couple of years old, it's safe to say that this book aged well.

*as a trans* I really wanted to like this book. And I will say it sparked me into enough gender chaos to make me cut my hair and get more piercings. However, the whole vibe is so rooted into assimilation. There were one too many articles about how being trans makes you better able to bridge the “male and female” divide in the office. I think this was strongly lacking a political perspective/basis/theme.

I really enjoyed this look at all the ways folx out there are doing (or not doing) gender and sex, and thought that it showed a lot of unique voices and stories. I really enjoyed the social commentary and also the unabashed uniqueness of all the collaborators on this anthology.

My rating is based on being a person who's in reading as a form of self-care. It's something I do for myself in my free time to help me relax and recharge. I have wrist tendinitis and it's aggravated by reading. I am doling out precious spoons here. So when I'm reading a collection of personal stories, it's not enough that the content be interesting or enlightening; I want to see great writing too. And it's not there. I'm reading through story after story and thinking "Okay, this person is obviously not a writer." But that's a problem to me, since they did write. It's a book FFS. My Kindle tells me that I have two hours left to finish the entire book. I got 26% in. It's not a long book. I could knock this out. But I think I'm saving tonight's spoons for Harry Potter instead.
