a friend lent this to me and I took forever to read it. i rushed most of it the day of their birthday so i could gift it back

An epic story with beautiful artwork, but far too trippy and mystical for the story or characters to feel grounded.
adventurous mysterious medium-paced

The beginning of this story (maybe the first quarter or the first third) was fantastic. I liked the characters and it felt like the story was really building into something great. And while plenty of interesting things happen after that point, there is just too much going on.

Jodorowsky is clearly an imaginative fellow and it shows in his characters, worlds and overall story. However, some things just seem to happen. For example, a character sees a woman and says something to the effect of, "I've been dreaming about you and searching for you my entire life." There's nothing wrong with that but it came out of nowhere. The reader has no proof that the character has ever thought of her before. I don't want to dwell on that example but the point is that things later in the story start happening with no warning and seemingly just to move the story along. I personally would still have read a significantly longer version of The Incal if there was more exposition.

The other big thing to note is that I've seen some if this story before. Elements of The Incal seem to have made it into other stories and Jodorowsky's other stories contain many of the same elements. I kind of wish this was the first thing I had ever read by Jodorowsky.

All told, this is a very good story. The characters are all unique and I enjoyed the overall story, even though things do get a little crazy.

Im torn by this.
its full of amazing ideas, and the art is gorgeous, but the story itself is all over the place - and not in a good way.

basically a interstellar battle of good vs evil - "The Incal" is a strange artifact that guides a poor detective Difool and the people he comes across.

It makes me look at more stuff by Moebius - but i think im going to avoid stuff by Jodorowsky in future.

Spectacularly creative artwork; the writing was a little lacking in comparison

  •  Though I struggled with this book - the writer was involved in an abandoned Dune animated film and took much creative direction from that work. It would serve as a good read-alike for people who like superhero comics & Dune.
