Review? Perhaps eventually, if I'll ever feel worthy... This was quite phenomenal.

I was initially going to give it 3 stars, but the ending won me over.

All I feel I can say is that the art is amazing. The layout can get a bit crowded and convoluted at times, but in general the clean linework and muted colours are very nice to look at. The narrative, however, is one giant mess. It bothered me more while I was reading it, but like I mentioned, by the time I was reading the ending I forgot about the rest. The dialogue, too, feels a bit stunted, especially at emotional peaks, and when paired with the paper-cutout characters it can get a bit clinical at times.

It didn't really bother me too much, personally. It's a weird abstract story, and I think that's fine. However, it did get really frustrating at times when the narrative seemed to greatly contradict itself, and trying to piece together the larger picture was a nightmare. Then there are the female characters, which, well, let's not go there. And John Difool, which honestly felt like the perfect example of a self-insert character; completely unappealing in every aspect, yet somehow the core of everything. Oh well.

Then there was the ending, which I really enjoyed. It seemed to tie things together, without really doing that. The way the pages were composed, contrasting with the more strict page layout throughout the story, and the abstract, simple style REALLY fit well.

I think it was fun, just don't go into it looking for a cohesive story full of emotional subtlety.

I should have known that this would be weird knowing that it is written by Jodorowsky. It was nice to see the art by Moebius. I just didn't like this.

This is a deeply weird book - I kind of feel like I need to go back to the start and read it again!
John Difool is a fairly unlikeable protagonist (which is somewhat the point) and I don't feel like I really got a grasp on many of the other characters, but again I don't think that was the point.
The art and imagination of The Incal is amazing - it is apparently foundational for a lot of modern science-fiction, which I can definitely see.
Certainly worth a read, if only to confront the deep and interesting bizarreness.

Great book, the size is magnificent and the paper and colors is great.
I read the story on little comic books, but the version blow my mind away
also all the notes about the creators was very insightful too.

artwork: 5 stars
writing: 1.5 stars

to the extent that jodorowsky contributed the story engine and the intergalactic canvas that inspired such intensely creative visual spectacle from moebius, the writing can't be discounted completely. but the absolutely one-dimensional nature of every character and the completely arbitrary cosmic soup of elements that masquerade as a plot here are a constant challenge to overcome in order to get to the next page of masterwork sci-fi illustration from moebius. still, it's worth the challenge.
