Beautifully written. This is a heavy story about a family in Trinidad and a series of choices that drive them apart and bring them together. I'm realizing that I had never read a book that took place in Trinidad, nor had I read one by a Trinidadian author. I was so moved by the author's writing that I often felt like I was there. I devoured this!

This was so much more than I expected, family, friendship and romance, secrets and struggles, ugliness and mistakes, and three strong, messy characters at its core who I can’t stop thinking about. It broke my heart clean in two.

3.5 stars - Love After Love is a story about how love, not blood, makes a family. Betty and her young son Solo welcome her co-worker Mr. Chetan to live with them after her husband dies. Everyone has their own secrets and eventually, their love is put to the test. This book kept me turning pages and I was sad to see it end.

MUST READ

My favourite thing about this book is that the author wrote it in "Trinidadian English" which I like because it is rare (at least for me) to read a book written this way.

The story is both relatable and heartbreaking and the weaving of family and friends who are family relationships...ups and downs and everything in between was magical.

I listened to the audiobook version which was read by the author who is an extraordinarily good orator and voice actor. The characters were alive I could picture each one from the voices she created from them. The west indies slang makes a lot of sense when vocalised so can imagine it's a challenging read.

The story itself tells about domestic violence, the stubborn strife between families, the struggles of being gay in T&T, and living the life as an immigrant in NYC. Pacing was good, I was on edge for each character and wanted to keep reading and reading to see how it unfolds. Highly recommend.

I really enjoyed LOVE AFTER LOVE; the story beautifully explores the complexities of family, both chosen and biological. I wrested with each of the characters in a good way and while I felt that each of their development lagged at times, I was too invested to ever stop reading. I also appreciated that the book explored both a more mature (in her 40s) woman dating and looking for love and the vulnerability of the male characters in a very raw, resonant way.
