Realistic and stark reimagining of the myths of Perseus in a world without supernatural creatures, magic and gods and leaving you with just the brutality of man and everything that comes from toxic male hubris.
I loved this dark and Feminist retelling of these myths from the perspective of the women touched by the story of Perseus. There's no need for sea creatures and snake headed monsters to create a feeling of fear when the men in the story are monsters themselves.

Unfortunately didn’t like this book. I saw another comment on here say that it was basically trauma porn and I fully agree with that. There is so much cruelty and violence towards women in this book and that’s kind of all there is, so much so that I had to take a break in between reading it because it was getting to be too sad and heavy for me. The issue is that there’s nothing meaningful that comes out of all the cruelty - no positive takeaway, no freedom for its female characters, no moment of reckoning for Perseus and the other horrible male characters. Literally felt like 280 pages of watching women suffer with nothing to show for it.
I was hoping the ending of this book would maybe redeem it for me but no. *Spoiler alert* The ending just condemns Danae and Andromeda to a lifetime of managing Perseus and his temper (Danae literally says “We will manage him” to Andromeda) and ends with Danae’s HOPE that Perseus - the man who murdered Andromeda’d fiancée and then stole and raped her - will turn his focus on being a good husband to her and father to their unborn child. That’s CRAZY I fear.

The fact that Perseus faced no consequences for his action made me deeply uncomfortable.

but that head...the woman he carries...who can know her truth? who lives to remember her?
an interesting twist on these stories and the notion of who controls narratives passed on. when to speak and when to be silent. when to fight and when to influence.
