I shouldn't rate this book bcuz I didn't finish it. And, in fact, I put it down really early, but that's bcuz holy shit it was awful, and I despised the characters. So, here we are. Creepy cover, though.

A delightfully twisted haunted house story. I love Cassandra Khaw, I loved the exploration of Japanese myth, and I loved being inside Cat’s mind for this wild ride.

I was drawn in by the cover and the premise. I couldn't get into the writing though. It was very poetic and rich, but in a way that made the story almost hard to follow. I would have DNF'd probably but it was short, so I stuck it out. It wasn't terrible.

It is clear that Cassandra Khaw is a talented writer, but this book wasn't really what I was expecting.

Content Warnings

The relationships' main characteristics seem to be petty jealousy, though I feel the narrator of the book didn't have any true emotions at all. I couldn't tell if she wanted what was happening because she didn't seem to be scared like the other 3 characters, and doesn't seem to have any remorse. The sprits in the book don't even seem like they are dangerous, they are just kind of there while the group freaks out and turn on one another.

I guess this book must be open to interpretation, while much of it is quite vivid, somehow not much is happening. I have a lot of unanswered questions. Overall, if you're already familiar with Japanese horror/folklore, this is an interesting short story to tell in the dark.
