This book made me angry. The characters were somehow stupider than most horror movie protagonists. Yet, horror movie protagonists at least do something besides cry, argue, and wet themselves. Ironically the one character I wanted to live (out of spite) died. By the end of it, I could only think to myself if I had a choice between getting myself killed going off alone and staying with these idiots I would choose the former.

I love a good haunted house steeped in Japanese superstitions. It's got yokai, it's haunting, it's visceral, it's the right amount of surreal to make it seem plausible.
If you've seen a Japanese paranormal show or movie, you'll understand exactly what is happening. It's not anything new or groundbreaking in that regard and the characters are not meant to be liked.

Maaaaan I really wanted to like this book. It has an eye-catching title/cover art and the premise sounds like good ol' haunted fun. I wanted to be spooked in the middle of spring.
Sadly, I spent more time irritated with the characters and shouting, "Why are you all even friends?!"
I think a good chunk of the story lingered on their dating lives and the weird tension they all have with each other. The horror and the lore took a backseat. The descriptive paragraphs were layered a little too thickly. It gave me a migraine.
I appreciated what the author was going for. I even enjoyed some of her wordsmithery. But in my humble opinion, horror is most effective without the flowery prose.

This was not good. Like at all.
Not scary, every single character is insufferable, and the Japanese folklore is not expanded on.
Heed the ratings and don't bother reading this shitshow of a book.

I have no idea why this is rated so low. I loved this novella. A perfect haunted house book with Japanese mythology. It gave some Haunting of Hill House vibes. Definitely read it!
Honestly, not even the least bit scary. The authors writing style is so old and uses unnecessary words to make her seem superior to her readers. Got this book for $5 and honestly after reading it, it's not even worth $5.
