This authors writing is not for me (if the duration of time it took me to finish this book is any indication!). She uses too many metaphors to the point where I audibly said “I get it already!” I also don’t think horror is just making grotesque comparisons to macabre ideas - it felt like the author relied on this more than an actual horror story. I’ve tried reading her other books and felt the same way. Unfortunately, I won’t be picking up more of this author’s work.

Personally, this one didn’t do it for me. It had potential, but had no character connection.

I couldn’t feel any connection to any character, so, it kinda negated any horror or creepy feeling I may have gotten.
They seemed to not really like each other and the lack of friendship empathy really showed.

The horror part of the story was very good, I love the lore theme. If the characters were tolerable, it could have been a 4.

I think I maybe have appreciated more if I read it myself. The audiobook was fine but I didn't really feel a chill or fear. Was hoping for more of a spook factor

if i pulled strings and funded a trip to god-knows-where, just to die while everyone survives, i would be the next ghost haunting the mansion.

this felt more like a nightmare put in paper with the lack of cohesion whatsoever. the characters were shallow and the assembled motley crew was so random—they clearly didn’t like each other enough to even be there. lin’s whole character was just trying to combat the illogicalness of horror movie/story characters while simultaneously doing said illogical actions done by aforementioned characters. good premise, but this could’ve been fleshed out better.

also the girl with blackened teeth was so straight, a thousand women didn’t appease her loneliness until a man was offered. meanwhile, cat was so gay she was yearning for contact with a ghost.

The book was okay. It wasn't great but wasn't bad. Call it baby's first horror book. It wasn't too scary if your starting to get into horror. The book is a little hard to digest with the author's overuse of poetic descriptions and the way we learned about the characters made it impossible to sympathize with them. Some parts were ruined by over foreshadowing. Overall not a horrible book. Just decent.

I have nothing nice to say about this book. Everything about it made me mad. Dear author: not everything has to be a metaphor. We get it, you know big, flowery words. Unfortunately, nothing you wrote had substance. You spent 90% of the book describing things and yet I couldn't tell you what anything looked like. Because everything had to be a feeling. I REALLY had to force myself to trek on when she wrote "Glib as the first words out of a babes' milk-wet mouth." WHAT ARE YOU SAYING??? WHO CARES??? TELL ME THE TONE. I was so taken out of the scene the whole time that when the spooky stuff did show up, it had no impact on me. The author described the worst things, not to mention none of the characters were likeable or relatable in any way. I couldn't have cared less about these people.

No substance to this book. I couldn't even really tell you what happened in my 52 pages of forced, frustrated reading.
