Not quite up there to make this read a 4 star rating, but I enjoyed the story telling of Nao and her struggles. Part four of the book lost me as there was just too much happening in a short amount of time compared to the rest of the novel, it felt too rushed. The pockets of life lessons from Jiko and her and Nao's relationship touched me, and I was relieved that Nao had a responsible adult there for her.

I like the concept of this book. I like how well researched it was, though the fact that it asserted that many worlds interpretation was the only valid interpretation of quantum mechanics did annoy me a bit. While I do enjoy magical realism I think perhaps I like it less when it pretends to have a strong scientific basis as it did here but that is a personal preference. The characters were interesting but also kind of one dimensional in that we don't really see growth as much as just get told that they change. It was an okay reading experience but not one where I was desperately turning pages or felt that I was reading something profound or able to change my perspective on things though certain passages were very well written and did manage to inspire emotion there were fewer than I would like and the plot was not enough to pull me through.

A Tale for the Time Being is about an older author, Ruth, who finds artifacts and the diary of a Japanese teen girl named Nao in a lunchbox washed up on the beach. What unravels are fascinating stories alternating between Ruth and Nao’s perspectives and timelines.

This book was deeper, darker, and more profound that I expected and it actually took me weeks to read. There are Zen Buddhist nuns, Kamikaze pilots, discussions of quantum physics, yet all the pieces of this mysterious puzzle fit together so well.

I’m giving this 3.5 stars because it was a little slow at times and while it was good I can’t recommend it to everyone. (The amount of content/trigger warning tabs I stuck in this book was a little much.)

“The way you write ronin is 浪人 with the character for wave and the character for person, which is pretty much how I feel, like a little wave person, floating around on the stormy sea of life.”

I don’t know what happened here & also I have a huge headache now.
I enjoyed the first 150ish pages immensely, then absolutely nothing happened for 120 pages, then it all took a super dark turn, but in a way that made me want to not finish the book. & then the ending.. yeah. No.
