This was the second time I read this book. I first read it when it came out (however many years ago that was) and I remembered this book, along with the rest of the series fondly.

A few years ago, I started reading the entire Harry Potter series to my son. We read a chapter or two before his bedtime each night, and would read other things in between the books. Over the course of two years or so we worked out way through the first four books and through half of this one. And then several months ago, my son read the rest of this book on his own, and then the remaining books in the series.

Since he finished he has been talking constantly about the HP series. But other than the books I reread with my son, I only had fuzzy memories of the later books. So I decided to reread this one, and maybe later I will reread the last two.

The Order of the Phoenix held up! I enjoyed it just as much as I did in the days of yore. It did not matter that I basically knew where the book was heading. The big death was no surprise for me. But I still really had fun reading it.

I reread the first 4 books to my son. I started reading this one to him, but at some point, he disappeared with the book and finished it himself. Then he went on to read the last two books on his own as well.

But that left me hanging. Sure, I read this book when it came out, but that was a decade-and-a-half ago. After a few weeks of my kid endlessly bringing up the details of the books I only sorta remembered, I decided to read this one, and the two that follow, again.

It held up! I liked it as much this time as I did 15 years ago. I don't just recommend reading this series. I also think it is worth revisiting even when you only remember all the bits that would otherwise count as spoilers.

BE SO FREAKING FORREAL!!! Professor Umbridge can kick rocks. The way that she was so triffling throughout every interaction had me SEETHING!!! Now my man Sirius Black… y’all are so wrong for that 😒

This is my first time reading Order of the Phoenix (which will also be true of the next two books in the series) and I'm glad it's been a good long time since I've seen the movie. I wanted to be able to read the book without remembering many details or constantly comparing the book and film.

I've seen the first four movies a lot and have read those books before, but there have been multiple times when anticipating this one has put a complete stop to an attempt to watch or read through the whole series. The film version of Dolores Umbridge is one of the most reprehensible villains I've ever encountered. She mixes with my own personality to push my buttons hard and I've dreaded experiencing her again. I decided to push through though and I'm glad to have done it.

I'd forgotten how angry Harry is through so much of this story and that also serves to darken it. It's not a fun read. His failure to romance Cho is hard to watch, but also completely believable for a kid with zero experience at romance.

But the mysteries are good, the world gets expanded a lot, and it's got a banger of a climax. I can't say I had fun, but I was completely captivated.

Reading books from my bookshelf in 2025 pt8

A lot of the things in this book are done well. But a lot aren’t.

I think it makes sense for the story to be sort of boring for the majority of the book since it’s always build up for the end of the school year. But that’s why I always quit the series halfway through.

This book had no business being 800 pages long and being the longest book in the series. It’s just quite stupid
If I had actually fully read and finished this series as a kid, I think I would’ve enjoyed it a whole lot more.
But I fear I’m not the target audience anymore. I will still attempt to read the last 2 books as well simply because they’ve sat unread on my shelf for so long

But on the other hand, the narration in the audiobook is absolutely brilliant and I love this man and his voice.

I switched between reading and listening, well I mainly listened when I couldn’t read the physical book or didn’t have the energy to, but either way I loved the narration. Brilliant
