I grabbed this from the $1 bin because I love the Tales of the City series but they charged me $10 and looking back I feel like this rly should've been $1. Fun read in a single sitting :D I like how Armistead Maupin plays with the autobiography/fiction vibe he's been playing with for decades in a more intentional way and the ending was kinda like ooh ooh oh! You got me! But overall the central relationship of the novel between Gabriel Noones and Pete didn't rly slay the way it should've I liked the Gabriel/Jess drama though!

I usually love Armistead Maupin's quirky, edgy characters -- but not this time. Though narrator Gabriel Noone was extemely likable, the tough-talking teenage AIDS patient didn't ring true. So the whole thing kind of fell apart on me.
Time to re-read Maybe the Moon.

Maupin knows how to turn a page with a needling mystery. And if there's no pat ending, all the better. The characters linger longer. Plus, in the version of the publication I have, I got to read the real story about Maupin's own "night listener" -- that of the demon-ridden young author who may or may not really have existed.
But I think the biggest reason I liked this story is because it betrays a characteristic that we like to think is the sole domain of those less educated than ourselves -- faceless Bible-thumpers in middle America, for example: How can you go on believing in something whose existence is repeatedly disproven?
The fact is we all do it sometimes, and for reasons that -- because of their intimacy to us -- are hard to refute without the assistance of some cruel spirit-carving chisel.

Random find at a bookstore. Probably wouldn't have ever come across otherwise, but glad I did. Complex characters and an ending open to interpretation.
It's kind of a weird story. The narrator starts off by explaining he tends to embroider the truth, "improving" it. He then claims that he won't on this story, but it do on becomes clear you can't believe him.
And then, the characters evade and straight up lie as well. So it's tough to tell what to believe. And that makes me less sure about what I feel. Is it a tragedy? An elaborate deception? A well made story? It feels less true than it ought, in the end.

Not knowing the real life events that inspired this book made it a bit of a frustrating read. Intriguing, interesting and engrossing in the introduction of the hoax element and the ensuing conundrum about what is true and what isn't.
