4.3 AVERAGE

funny informative lighthearted fast-paced

The man knows how to spin a yarn, lemme tell ya.

It's quick, it's witty, it's insightful, it's full of behind-the-scenes stories, but most of all it's celebratory of the people around him and the things they made together. It mainly covers his start in St. John's local comedy/arts scene, the path to 22 minutes, the specials, his start riffing with/on politicians, and ends right before the Report got off the ground.

It also feels like a bit of a love letter to local arts scenes that nurtured folks of his graduating class of comedy and television, though especially Newfoundland and Labrador's of course. It reminded me of how much distinctly Canadian art and media and shows and news surrounded me as a kid and how little it seems there is now. (The decline of cable and radio along with the Americanization of everything else and all that.) I left this book feeling like I want to seek more of it out again.

Really, they could've put a CBC Gem ad in the back and done some numbers.

If anyone else had read this, it wouldn't have worked. Rick Mercer in his own words and own voice is gold.
