This novel is an exceptional philosophical primer.

It is also a terrible piece of fiction.

I've given it a three-star rating to reflect this dichotomy.

This is the book I wish I’d read before studying philosophy formally. Its clarity and breadth in tackling a notoriously complex subject are unmatched. Gaarder builds each philosophical layer with care, cleverly threading thinkers and eras into a cohesive, comprehensible whole.

Unfortunately, the narrative suffers from a lack of genuine conflict, and the characters feel flat and largely indistinct. Sophie, in particular, accepts the increasingly bizarre events of the story with little resistance, which drains the plot of momentum.

Sophie's World is rather like stepping back into those hazy days of Philosophy class, held in a warm, incense-laden greenhouse.

Thank goodness the teacher wasn’t also the novelist.

SpoilerLife happened, and it took me longer than expected to read this book, but it turned out to be a good thing. I had enough time to think about the topics.

It's one of my favorite books I have read thus far and one that I will definitely come back to in the near future. I learned so much from Jostein, Sophie, Hilde, Alberto and Albert.

From other reviews, I gathered that people didn't like the story part of the book and only enjoyed the philosophy course, but I think the story is quite nice. It flowed well and was a good break between all the heavy topics.

V nice, gg Jostein.
