At first, I thought this was really slow-moving and alot of "textbook" reading. As the fiction story moved along though, I thought it got more interesting, and the philosophy lessons started to happen in a conversation, which made it more engaging for me. I like how he built the philosophical thinking into the fiction story to really get you thinking about the themes and lessons.

DID NOT FINISH

Not for me. But that's the point.

I knew going in that I, a fairly well educated 34 year old woman, was not this books target audience. The painful simplicity of the language, the uninspiring plot, and the lack of depth of character did absolutely nothing to grab my interest. It was a slog to get through. That being said, it does indeed introduce simple philosophical concepts in an accessible way for a young teen to understand and build upon.

I enjoy the idea of a book that tells a story designed to introduce some otherwise daunting concepts but for me this just didn't hit the mark. It felt too contrived and, for lack of a better word, silly, to really engage any interest.

Sorry, this book was dumb. It helped me learn more about philosophers, but it was not gripping, unless you like opium-induced hippy stuff. I will NOT be enduring this again.

I really enjoyed this book because it made me question everything. Not a 5 star only because I found Sophie, the protagonist, not a very lovable character. I found her kind of annoying and rude at times. However, this book will be on my favorites shelf simply because of how much it made me thing and how many strong quotes I got from it.

I’m utterly confused and I’m not sure if I liked this book or not. I like the approach of mixing a fictional fantasy with philosophical arguments and history but it felt like that it made more difficult to grasp and understand what’s said. Thought I enjoyed reading fictional part of Sophie’s adventure is the philosophical teacher, it made me really dizzy when the story turned really unrealistic from the middle to the end.
I also think the idea of an old guy secretly sending letters to a 15-year-old girl is a bit creepy.
Towards the end, the story unfolds and it turns out that the Sophie’s story is a story inside the story, but I’m struggling to understand philosophy still more than half way through the book. I can’t decide this form of writing is helpful or not helpful to understand philosophy especially for intended young people.
The garden party was the most absurd. It gave me a headache to think if there is any philosophical meaning of the story. If it does, I couldn’t get it.
My lack of understanding is maybe not because of the book. I liked and disliked this book at the same time.

INteresting and well voven story that is quite boring and hindering the goal which I wanted to get out of it. Not necessarily bad, but eventually the story gets old and uninspired and I'd enjoy reading pure philosophy. But very possibly that's just me.
