I read this because I wanted to brush up on the history of philosophy in an easily digestible book, and for that, this did the trick. It was a little like an old musical where the songs are written first and then loosely tied together with a story. The story wasn’t bad, but I would not recommend this book for the story alone. There were also some odd choices that I chalk up to its being in translation from Norwegian and being somewhat Norwegian-centric.

Precioso. Una verdadera obra de arte que toca el fondo, ¿o será la superficie?, de nuestro ser.

I FINALLY FINISHED IT.
I definitely learned a lot about different philosophers while reading this book, even though I've already forgotten some. I feel like the author explains everything quite well, and it was not difficult to understand. This was a great book, but I do feel like it was a bit boring at places. The first half of this book is mainly just letters. The second half was more exciting, and the last 100 pages or so flew by. It's a slow read, but still interesting.

I put off reading this book for 5 years (!) after my grandmother recommended it to me. That was foolish for several reasons. the biggest reason is that it was a very good book, and not nearly as intimidating as the sub-title suggests. I recommend this book to anyone who wonders where we, as humans, came from, what our purpose is, and other such questions of life.

This book gets a 2.5 rating. It did a decent job of covering a lot of material in a digestible way. However I was dismayed that the philosophical history didn't do a better job with the generally harmful and oppressive views western philosophy holds about women.

I also found the writing to be less than stellar, though perhaps translation issues come into play.

The plot line is odd, though it does contribute to the general aim of the book - to "wake up" and think critically about who we are and why we are here.

Perhaps a good read if you're looking for a thinker of a novel. Not recommended for vacation, which is when I started it.
