Anansi Boys

It's a simple-ish story - you pretty much know the protagonists (the "not quite good guys") are going to win in the end and All Will Be Well - this is no armageddon novel. But it is a fascinating take on mythology in the "real" world, with the typical Gaiman polish and wry spin. A good one.

I have a crush on Neil Gaiman. I totally do. His works are imaginative, and, often, fun. He is a talented and unique writer. I have liked deeply his short stories and many of his adult novels. All that being said, I just didn't feel Anansi Boys.
Anansi Boys has all of Gaiman's fantastical trademarks, but the magic just wasn't there. Trying to pinpoint exactly what was missing is not easy to do, but I think it lay with the characters. I didn't really like them. Not any of them. If I don't like the characters, I don't have a vested interest in them and, frankly, I don't really care if they get their happy ending or are eaten by tigers. Partly, I disliked the characters because they were unlikable, pathetic, selfish, etc., and, partly, because they were pretty one dimensional and flat.
I finished it in a timely way, but I didn't feel any strong emotions while reading. It was all very meh.
For a delicious read, I encourage you all to read American Gods or Neverwhere before picking up this slightly bland eat.

This was witty and downright funny at times but I didn't really feel any connection to the characters. Far from the worst Gaiman book I've read but not the best. I was more interested in the humor between the different characters on earth and how their stories intersected and not interested at all in the huge overarching mythology of the gods. Honestly if the gods, the different worlds and the caves at the beginning of the world were left out, it wouldn't have made a difference to the story - I kept waiting for these two aspects of the story (one human and messy and one godly and messy) to harmonize and it never really got there. I was left at the end kind of like *shrug* what was that all about then?

4.5

It didn't stick with me like Gaiman's other works have, but it was still an interesting story told with beautiful phrasing.

Loved this. The narrator of the audiobook made it extra amazing.
