Really enjoying this series. Even though I think I may have taken a year off in between book 2 and book 3. I'm hoping Alex is going to pick a faerie court soon.
4 1/2 stars
So this one was so much better than the 2 before it, I cannot even believe. I was going to quit but decided that it would be the easiest series to finish to fit a challenge so push on to book 3. I so didn't want to go to this book. Right from the beginning, I enjoyed it, so it was a big surprise.
In this one Alex is setting up a business "Tongues for the Dead" and after seeing an apparent suicide, yet the ghost swears he didn't, and wouldn't, they get their first client in his wife. Unluckily it is more complicated than a first client in that the wife is part of an anti-witch and fae group, and that includes grave witches. In addition, after talking to the corpse, Alex and the mortician, realize that there is more going on, yet the police seem lacking in response or belief. After all that Alex has shown, I was a little ticked about the situation with the police and their discounting of Alex's theories or observances. They sweep her aside, yet have no way of dealing with the issue themselves. Or they totally screw it up. I would break my ties to John at this point because to me he put not only her, but every one else in danger from the start of the investigation by not insisting on bringing her in on it.
So MCIB officer, Briar Darque, comes in and at first misreads Alex altogether. Yet, as the story unfolds, Darque is the only "official" that takes her seriously. I first met Briar Darque in the short story "Ruby Red" in the anthology, [b:Kicking It|15980677|Kicking It (Alex Craft, #2.5; Chicagoland Vampires, #8.25)|Faith Hunter|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1364324827s/15980677.jpg|21732927], with her partner, Derrick Knight (thanks to Jenn for including the names in her review. I didn't) but Knight doesn't show up and at first, Darque, doesn't seem like the straightforward thinking officer from that story. She later pulls it around and I would like to read the spin off that sounds like is in the making.
So Alex is still pining for her two beau of Death and Falin. Falin acts like a totally jerk throughout this book pretty much. Not that he has much choice, or maybe it is his choice? From a forum I wrote from book 2 "Falin being the Queen's pawn and perhaps by choice", so I was ready to write him off and after the beginning of this book, I did. My main issue with this book is that she doesn't write him off and pines away for him. He is totally controlled, whether by choice or not, by the Winter Queen. There is no way to trust anything he does or says. So I am angry at Alex for not pushing him as far as possible no matter what attraction, it is silly and dangerous not to. The most immature thing she did in this book.
So Death, oh, Death. What an intimate thing to go through and who would know that it was possible. Well, only Alex since she cannot talk about it. I would think that this relationship would either move forward or would remain as trusted soulmates that cannot be together but are there for one another. Please, oh please, do not continue Falin as a love interest. use him for info with a grain of salt but never, never, never trust that he has your back. Certainly don't go back to being a lover to him. Really if she cannot have Death, then move on, not to Falin. Give it time to figure out Death cannot work, then morn and move on. There are other fish in the sea and Falin is a Shark.
So the investigation was great. Getting more of her fae information and seeing her interact with her dad was great. How she, her friends, and Briar figured out and got rid of the rider, made sense and was understandable even during the battle. What a breath of fresh air coming off Karen Chance's novels where they twist and jerk you this way and that and you have no idea what is going on. I not only understood but it seemed to follow step by step, which was great.
Well, even hearing that the next is not as good, I'll not be dreading picking it up. Though if it goes back to the same, loose ends, triangle romance, it might be my last.

He says she got in the way at the restaurant and tries to make her feel back but really, that is completely his fault and then the police station, having her handcuffed and passing her off. Totally his fault again. He almost got her killed, in fact did, if not for another intervention by death. So MCIB officer, Briar Darque, comes in and at first misreads Alex altogether. He even tells her this... but only after telling her that he loves her. How selfish to string her along. Instead he should have said, "Stick with me and I'll continue to do this until you too are owned by the Queen. And really, this would benefit me, but not you. I would like you to be owned by her and used by her in order to have you by my side." Maybe she would think twice. Then again, she should be thinking that this is also something the Queen has told him to say perhaps. So Death, oh, Death. What an intimate thing to go through and who would know that it was possible. I'm not sure what I think about this series. I enjoy it, then it pisses me off. I've read MANY books with love triangles (that seems to be the thing to do these days) and I can deal with most of them. I'm not sure why this particular love triangle drives me as crazy as it does. I guess it is because there is no triangle in my mind. I'm not a Falin fan of any kind. I want Alex and Death to find a way to be together. That being said, this ending really upset me (you'll understand when you read it).
Now the story is great. You get to see more into Death's life (is that what you call his existence?). We see more into the other soul collectors, though not as much as Death's. We also get to see more of how Falin works (whether it is his choice or not). I just don't like him.

Grave Memory is book 3 in the Alex Craft series. I'm still loving how this series is going and plan on binge listening to these as fast as the library lets me. The series itself revolves around Alex Craft, a grave witch that also does PI work and consults with the police from time to time. It's a pretty rich paranormal world with witches, ghosts and fae mixed in.
I'm going to just dive right in since I've already explained about Alex and what she is. This installment we have Alex determined to solve an odd case. She's out and about when she winds up at the scene of a suspected suicide, yet the ghost is saying he didn't jump. No one seems to believe there is foul play and yet with digging Alex is finding a connection with another mysterious suicide. As she unravels more details, we realize something dark is at work and the only one that can help is Alex.
Grave Memory is another great addition to a series I can't put down. I was so happy to get a bit more info on the fae as well as finally learning about the soul collectors. The slight romance aspect on the other hand leaves a bit to be desired, but I'll hope we get more of it later in the series. All in all, I'm loving this series and would recommend it to fans of fae Urban Fantasy novels.

That cliffhanger!
I'm so glad I was able to pick up the next book immediately (and I've already started reading it, but paused long enough to write this review).
In Grave Memory, we finally learn more about Death and how the soul collecting business works. He'd been a mystery to us up until now, and it was about time we got this information. The romance/love triangle remains the weakest part of this series, but I finally feel the chemistry between Alex and Death.
Another aspect of the series that could use work is the world-building. Now that we're three books in and things have gotten more complex and we've learned more about the magic of this world, there are so many confusing things about how this world works that need to be answered. For instance, why do humans leave investigations involving fae solely to the FIB, an organization that sounds corrupt, as its members just follow orders from their king or queen, and not necessarily what's in the best interest of solving a crime? It's strange that fae are deeply entrenched in human society, living regular human lives for the most part, and yet the police let the fae regulate themselves? How do they know justice is being served?
And *SPOILER FOR THE VERY END OF THE BOOK* how is Falin just allowed to forcefully move into Alex's home just because the Winter Queen ordered it? Alex may also be fae, but she's not aligned with any one court and she lives in the mortal world. It seems outrageous that there's no higher authority she can go to about this abuse of power. And what if Alex weren't fae, but a regular human? I feel like a world like this would would have structures in place to address this.
Sorry this review became more of a thread of questions, but I just have so many! All in all, it was a great book and I'm really loving this series. Sometimes the contrived love triangle, and my many questions about the world takes me out of it, though.

Relecture : j'adore toujours autant et Falin me sort toujours autant par les yeux...il m'énerve, mais il m'énerve...comme l'ancien ami flic d'Alex d'ailleurs. Bonjour la trahison.

This book actually started out pretty slow, and didn't really pick up until around 40ish %. That's when I found myself not able to put down the book and just have to keep reading.
We learn a little more about Alex and her heritage in this book, I feel like we are pealing one layer of mystery per book, and I just can't wait to get to the core! We also learn a little more about Death, and his job as a Soul Collector, I wonder when we will finally learn his name, if he has one.
After this book I am leaning towards Team Death. At first I was very excited with their relationship in this book, and then I am hating what is going to happen to Alex and Death (I know I am going crazy here), In the end of this book I really just wish there would be a change in their near future. I am rooting for you Death!
I am so annoyed with Falin, even though this book focus more of Alex and Death, I know I can't blame Falin for his actions and it's really that stupid Winter Queen's fault. But you know what Falin, I am still mad at you!
I am not sure how I feel about the ending yet, it's certainly making Alex's situation interesting, I know I am going to sound crazy because I do miss reading about Falin, so I guess I'll settle with the situation even though it isn't ideal.
Grave Memory only left me waiting more! Can't wait to read the next one!

I really like this series, but I am more interested in the story line and charactors then in the relationship problems Alex is having with Death and Fallon.
