I waffled between three and four stars on this one before giving it four because it kept me eagerly turning pages. I think this book suffered from a bit of debut syndrome, but I’ll likely give the second book in the series a shot at redemption.

Ari Thor is a rookie policeman who moves to a remote northern town in Iceland for his first work posting. According to the local cops there everything is quiet with very little crime, but in true small town crime fiction style, that all changes quickly with a couple of violent attacks and a murder, amid heavy winter snowstorms that cut off the village. Ari has to track down the mystery while getting to know all of the locals and deciding whether to remain with his girlfriend in Reykjavik or pursue a relationship with his piano teacher. It seemed to track along quite slowly and then all of a sudden everything was solved. Not bad but won't follow up the rest of the series.

Promising, but clearly a first novel. I’m interested to see if the author has developed with subsequent books in this series.

This wasn’t quite as compelling as a lot of other Nordic Noir (or crime fiction in general) I’ve read, but it still hit on that essential formula that tends to work for me. I found the setting especially interesting and well done, and I’ll likely continue with the series.
