kinda gory at times and an amazing villain origin story.
she was so right to be mad, the system sucked and you see this amazing transformation as she realizes she ISN’T the problem. the ballet company, her “best friend”, the board, the instructors, all of them are a part of such a disturbing and impossible infrastructure. even an individual with power is limited in a structural nightmare.
the found family trope is my favorite and will always get me. in this story the realization that there are people who will love and support you if you fail at something, if you no longer have power, if you are no longer “useful”. the world is not a zero sum system. people are people and complex and confusing and you don’t have to achieve something or prove that you add value to be admired, loved and cared for.
I like the exploration of cruelty and revenge and malice because there’s a lot of anger in this world and in the split second, sometimes it would feel so nice if you could have that immediate gratification of justice. and, that immediate justice doesn’t fix the larger problems at work.

This was not for me. Had some very cool ideas, the execution just didn't work for me
I have to give this book credit for making me think, but I didn’t love it. I took a chance reading a book outside my usual genres. I’m glad I did, but there’s definitely a reason this isn’t my go-to.
I liked Laure but every relationship she had with others just felt underdeveloped. They felt flat and one-dimensional, like they could be defined by just one thing. When there was a kiss, I was like wait, what did I miss. Laure couldn’t carry this on her own m, but the side characters didn’t help.
I also had a bit of trouble with the pacing and the plot. It would grip me, then it’d lose me and this would repeat over and over.
I realize there is a Book 2, and it’s a toss up if I read it.
