Pre-reading this for my tween and found it too be just a bit too mature. Definitely for an older teen, and most likely a boy at that. The story is told from the perspective of a teenage boy with some language and sexual content. Worthwhile for it's portrayal of an American Indian reservation and the bravery that the protagonist displays.
fast-paced
Exceeded my expectations. A rare example of me finding a hyped book worth the hype.
I've read this book twice. I just love it. I love it's honesty and tragic tales. I love the humor and perspective.
A quick, very enjoyable read. It has all the emotions - and all of them are wrapped up in the narrator’s unflinching humor. I enjoyed the additional illustrations, which felt like a talented teen would draw to express himself.
Time Period: Present
Genre: YA/Literary Fiction/Realistic fiction
Geographical Setting: Washington
Plot Summary: Albert Spirit, a.k.a. Junior, has lived on the Spokane reservation his whole life, but when he turns 14 he asks his parents if he can go to the public high school in nearby Reardon, because he feels that the only way he'll ever get anywhere in life is if he leaves the reservation. However, this is not an easy transition for Albert who is shunned by both the spokane Indians and the white kids in Reardon. As soon as he leaves his life dramatically changes as his sister, dad's friend and grandma all pass away in the same year. He begins to blame himself for all the bad things happening on the reservation, but eventually he realizes that it is not a bad thing to want to better himself and that what goes wrong on the reservation is not his fault.
Subject Headings: Native americans, assimilation, friendship, family relationships, death
Appeal Factors: This book is told in first person, journal format by Arnold with accompanying cartoons, because the boy wishes to be an artist. There is a limited amount of cursing and talk of sex and masturbation, however, there is no actual sex in the book and the f-word is only found once.

Read this in one day. Just starts at a running pace from the beginning and doesn't slow down. I hate the term Juevenile fiction or young adult. A good story comes through no matter what, and this is a great story told from a unique perspective.
Themes that are explored: Race, identity, death, pain, grief, joy, life. Inequality.
The use of images is great too. Makes the main character that much more real.
Whether your an adult or not, this is definitely worth reading. There are parts that are a little hokey, but the main character is hokey in his own way so it works.

This book had me laughing and crying. The reality of it though…
~4.6~
"and he drove me home plenty of other nights, too. if you let people into your life a little bit, they can be pretty dang amazing."
lOoK aT mE gO! Yes yes yes, i am a reading MONSTER right now haha.
I picked this lovely little book up around two hours ago and i CoUlDn'T PuT iT dOWn. It was just the little pick-up i needed after finishing that whirl of emotions [b:The Four Winds|53138081|The Four Winds|Kristin Hannah|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1594925043l/53138081._SY75_.jpg|79888572].
I was a little skeptical about this book when I first opened it because of the writing style but then I was like. Oh wait. This is EXACTLY how I do annotations, reviews, and journals....so I just saw myself HAHA. Wow, it was a joy.
Anyways, I had no idea what to expect with this book just that it was supposedly really good. I was pleasantly surprised! Alexie had this odd gift of making some serious topics not very serious and should I be concerned? probably. But this book was a joy to read! I was worried that he would be bullied throughout the entire book at this new school but he was accepted and I love reading it! I think my favorite moments were when he was playing basketball. I love the Coach and Roger.
This book covered topics such as breaking away from the life he thought he was destined to live and he is getting a chance to prove people wrong. I thought that Alexie was able to weave these themes super easily into this book and I appreciated having fun but also talking about topics that can go very deeper.
okay, I must go, but I think that if anyone just has a little time then they should pick this book up! It is a quick read that is meaningful and fun!
HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY!
