Really good story, though I struggled with some word choices and some things that seemed illogical to me.

Other than I remember from the first time I read this (in Dutch), this one is much better than House Atreides. I read it in English now. What I like most about this one is that the Houses and other power structures we get to know in Herberts universe aren't really that powerful here. They are all seeking to establish their positions, like a qualifying race if you will. There is a real sense of despair and clinging to old traditions and safeties that aren't there anymore that appeals to me.
Also, the annoying spelling mistakes are much scarcer than in House Atreides.

Okay, the first prequel was good, this one was great. Reading Dune is like reading the Odyssey to me, it’s not supposed to feel like a drama, it’s an epic. This book felt more like a novel by contrast, and I felt myself genuinely heartbroken for characters, really really well done.
None of the prequels are of the same caliber as the original Dune, and I don't think they need to be. These books were created for us die hard fans that can't get enough of the Dune universe. Come into these expecting to be entertained and to gain more knowledge on the events leading up to DUNE, and you will enjoy them. I think they do what they set out to accomplish.
So far, this is my favorite of the House series. The action really starts to build and we are taken deeper into the goings on of the Imperium at this time. Every thing is slowly being but into place for the events of DUNE.
In my opinion, the new authors could never come close to the masterpiece created by Frank Herbert. These books are great for the slightly obsessive, because they give us more of what we could never otherwise have: more stories.

A worthy prelude to Dune that really begins to set the table and delves deep into the background politics and outright animosity among the great and minor houses of the Imperium. There are plenty of bad guys and good, moral characters and immoral that leads one on to the next edition in the Prelude series, House Corrine. I read many of these when I was much younger but not in the chronological, but the publication order. I am now, slowly, but surely, going through in the chronological order of the series and am deriving even more enjoyment from the ongoing saga.
