Ok I think I am giving this 4.5 stars. The reason being:
-first the positives. I love this. I watched the show first and both are equally as good. It has all the vibes. The characters are amazing. Lockwood is my book bf.
-then a negative. If it wasn't for the show, I would find the beginning of the book very confusing, because it only explains later on how everything works and stuff and who the characters are. So I recommend at least watching episode 1 (if I remember correctly that's when she is going to join the company?) So that you have a better idea who and what. Unless you do not mind diving into action and learning the details later on, of course.
-also another one...I don't know, it could totally be that because of the show I already knew what was going on and what happend. But there is something about that plot that doesn't completely draw me in? But don't let that stop you from reading this book, because it's still amazing. Also, I'm known for not loving plots but loving characters and the vibes lol.

Я хотіла розслабитися і зануритись в історію про привидів з цією книгою, згадати свої дитячі пригоди, але це мені погано вдалося, бо все враження зіпсувала токсичність головної героїні (оповідачки). Стільки хейтспічу на адресу свого колеги (друга?), стільки жовчі, що читати було просто неприємно. Якась в неї постійна розлюченість на все і всіх, це набридає дуже швидко і потім стає вельми нудно.
Мені якраз сподобався персонаж Джорджа, він не плаский, а цікавий. Але його так часто хейтять і принижують його ж "друзі": за надмірну вагу, за те, як він їсть, за окуляри, за одяг (wtf???), що стає дуже прикро і сумно. Чому автор так не любить свого ж персонажа; як в сучасній дитячій історії можна нашпиговувати текст чимось накшталт ("він такий огидний через те, що товстий", "ці його огидні окуляри...а без окулярів в нього очі потворні", і тд), для мене незбагненна загадка.
Це не ок. Питання, чому саме така література може навчити дітей, риторичне. В кращому випадку, нічому. Мені здається, я ніколи не зустрічала подібного в книгах, які позиціонуються як "затишні, дитячі пригодницькі історії про дружбу". Коли так ведуть себе антагоністи це одне, але ж не друзі, камон.
Атмосферу туманного Лондона і замків з привидами тут і правда непогана. Проте цього було зовсім мало, в основному ото все "я відчуваю невимовну лють за те, що мені щось там сказали" і "товстий, огидний, окуляри, одяг, огидно їсть пончики, бридкий, товстий, товстий, товстий" - оце відсотків 80 книги.
Шкода, шкода. Проте, як то кажуть, мої очікування, мої проблеми.

Think young Sherlock Holmes, plus young Watson and a daring young lady, add a mystery and plenty of creepy ghosts. Terrific!

I'm such a wimp! I had to finish this book reading it by daylight or while the TV was on. Freaky as it was, I'll definitely keep up with the series. Stroud knows how to write creepy stuff.
this series is dripping in nostalgia for me. it means the world to me and it should be acknowledged that everything i say about it is extremely biased. that being said lockwood can lay off george like jesus christ
I read this book because of the Netflix show adaptation, and the adaptation is fairly faithful to the book. In the book, George is overweight and the narration of the book never lets you forget it, which felt like too much.
I enjoy this story and these characters, but sometimes I feel like Lockwood's similarity to Sherlock Holmes is a little heavy handed, and he can be a little too egotistical to sympathize with. Hopefully that just means the character has room to grow in the rest of the series.
I can definitely see myself reading the next book in this series.
