Although this is number 4 in the Vampire Chronicles series, this book reads a bit more like a standalone book, following the life of the vampire Lestat. The notion of someone who has the ability to go into someone else's body and take over is also very fascinating so this book had a bit of a sci-fi twist to the plot. The idea of a vampire suddenly in a human's body and dealing with very human things (peeing, getting sick etc) was hilarious. At this point in the series the character Lestat is very fleshed out also (no pun intended) so we know that he's mischievous, infinitely curious about things, often makes bad decisions, and is selfish.

However, there were a few things that happen in the middle and toward the end, that really really made me dislike his character. I think that's probably the point, though. He himself often states that he knows he is evil and selfish etc. And yet Anne Rice writes the character very well, always doing something to make us feel bad for him, and to be interested in what he's going to do next. I think this is a fantastic example of writing a 'bad' character and still keeping the reader very interested and rooting for him.

My main complaint though is that EVERYONE falls in love with Lestat. Like seriously, throughout the whole series, everyone just loves him. It's annoying. And I get it, he's the 'bad boy' that is infinitely interesting, it makes sense that everyone falls in love with him and gives him second chances. But by the end of this book, especially because of something that he does at the very end, I just....was really annoyed with him. He really did not deserve everyone's love and pity. And the victim at the end - someone who has something very bad done to him - he just forgives Lestat for the terrible thing he did! It's crazy.

(Trigger Warning) There is also on-page sexual assault. It is not violent but it is there. This book also features a consensual sex scene which is very different from the first 3 books in this series.

Overall though, a very interesting plot and a very interesting character. Very well written and well paced.

Started out slowly but ended up being amazing. The Vampire Chronicles always surprise me with the way they evolve into something new and enthralling with every book. Can't wait to read more about Lestat and the others!

Only 4 stars because these vampires are stressing me out with their terrible decision-making (even more than in the first three books)

A great breath of fresh air. I wish somehow this ended the series. It could've really played off of the first book and provided a lot of closure. Why did she make so many books in these Chronicles?

¡Me encantó!

Y David.
