I wanted to reread this before restarting the series. I forgot how much of a douche Lestat can be. He’s an interesting character with lots of flaws and I think that’s why I like him/ his story so much. I think Mojo is now my favorite character 🥰
I really appreciate Rice’s back and forth with religious beliefs in the story. I’m excited to see how this story continues, especially since I started it over 20 years ago.

Graphic: Death, Gore, Self harm, Violence
Moderate: Child death, Stalking, Toxic friendship
Re-read this book for the first time in roughly 15 years, and was reminded of why it's still one of my favorite books in the TVC series. I suppose I really am just charmed by serious discussions of morality and "nature" in fiction, even if the allegory being used is extremely on-the-nose and unsubtle.
And it was overall just written in a fun way. I find it much more enjoyable to read her work written in this style than some of the meandering flowery purple prose Anne Rice has written into the series. Though I do still enjoy those books as well.
David especially is a very endearing character, who has a captivating dynamic with Lestat. I would read a whole series about him and the Talamasca alone.
Big fan of Anne's method of worldbuilding & how much she leans on the "un-human" aspects of vampires, a decidedly Not Human creature, juxtaposed with the complex (as is the typical fashion) human-like emotions they feel. And I am always just a sucker for a "morally grey" lead, especially one as frequently used in an almost self-insert role for the author as Lestat is for Anne — with obvious limitations and exceptions where it applies because, after all, I do still understand how fiction & storytelling work, and I'm not entirely delusional.
I'm not writing a well-thought out & super-analytical review this time because I only re-read this for fun. Which it was, despite my grievances. Intentionally not talking about those grievances or a specific prominent theme of the book, because it would require me to write at LEAST seven coherent, eloquently worded, lengthy paragraphs about a subject I really do not want to write THAT much about for THAT long. I know I wouldn't be able to help myself if I started, and it would not only take too much time but also make me feel terrible. So I'm not doing it.
