Tale of the Body Thief is an easy book to have a love hate relationship with. It's way too long, and should probably be half it's length, the narration is super fun to read, it explores some themes but really fumbles the landing of some of its ideas, but it's also mostly just wacky scenes of Lestat arguing with people or disgusted by bodily functions. It really reads like a first draft that needed to be revised, but also is 400 pages of pure Lestat POV, which is kind of it's main selling point.

My issue with it is that the "first draft" vibes both make it rough to get through on pure word count, and make some of the problematic elements feel less justified in the story, because I can see what she was going for, but she didn't stick the landing. It also has tone issues, having both some of the funniest scenes so far in the series and some of the darkest. It didn't turn me off the series, but I wouldn't generally recommend it as a book without a big annotation and wouldn't disagree with someone who couldn't bring themselves to enjoy it.

Adding a bunch of historical books from the 90s

LOVED this book. My favorite Anne Rice novel, AND one of my all-time favorite books.

I'm increasing my rating to 3 stars (there used to be 2) because to be honest, it's unfair to compare it to the awesome Queen of the Damned. I quite enjoyed it as separate from the previous books, but unfortunately, the pacing is terrible and the plot is paper thin. I still really love Anne Rice's style, though.

Once again, I’m more obsessed than I’d like to admit. HOWEVER, -2 stars for decidedly gratuitous FIRST PERSON PERPETRATOR somewhat graphic assault depiction?? That is just kind of?? Glazed over?? Hm?

If it happens again, I drop the series, teehee.

This man is so unserious. He's called the Body Thief, Lestat, not the Body Borrower.

Also being ready to give up on the experience of humanity after 2.5 seconds because you tripped over and then remembered about shitting is so funny I couldn't breathe.

VERY long and pretty dull

Rice has this incredible ability to pander to fan service while also managing to say absolutely nothing for a solid 400 pages. I find that Lestat as a character is only made interesting through his relation to Claudia, and how haunted he is by her even four books later. Possibly the only instance of the show being better than the source material. 2.5 stars

Great twists and turns and the writing made everything vivid as usual but I guess the modern day setting put me a little off, I don't know.
