In early 1937, Violet Lawson summons her granddaughters, Clara and Madeleine, to her. The young women have a strained relationship and have barely spoken for over a year, but they had been the best of friends growing up. Their grandmother has determined to give them a chance to mend the relationship by sending them together on a journey to Europe. Although disinclined to be thrown together, Clara and Maddy set off in April to travel to Paris, Venice and Vienna to fulfil their grandmother's dying wish - that they hand deliver a final letter to three people, one in each city, who Violet needs to say goodbye to.
Beautifully written, the story follows Maddy and Clara as they journey through Europe, discovering the cities, their beloved grandmother and themselves in unexpected ways.

4.5 stars... This is my first title by the Gaynor/Webb duo and I enjoyed it so much! I fell in love with sisters Clara and Maddie, and watching their relationships with each other and themselves grow and change during the course of the book. It's a story of personal - and physical - journeys, as the sisters travel on the Queen Mary to France and on the Orient Express to Venice and then on to Vienna, delivering three important letters from their grandmother, Violet, and a journey home on the fated Hindenburg. With opulent settings, family secrets, and romantic entanglements, this is a charming, tension-filled page-turner. Highly recommend.
This is such a delightful historical read! A grandmother who has had a lifetime of estrangement from her sister is determined to give her feuding granddaughters a chance at a better relationship. She gifts them with a trip to Europe with particular jobs for them to complete together. I really enjoyed their journey, as well as, the flashbacks to their Grandmother's time there.

Thoroughly enjoyed this novel. An interesting take on pre-WWII life though the eyes of two women - sisters and yet worlds apart.
