I stayed up most of the night to read this book, taking me on a European adventure in the 1930’s, an ominous time. Maddie and Clara are sisters, different in their approaches to life. Their dying grandmother, Violet, asks them to deliver three letters in person to make amends. The first is to their grandfather in Paris, providing us a tour of that beautiful city. Next is Venice to bring a letter to a man they did not know, while the third letter was to Violet’s estranged sister. The relationship between the sisters reminds me of my sisters, sometimes squabbling, other times laughing. The third trip is to. Vienna, where the threat of the Nazis becomes real for Maddie, who aspires to be a journalist. I highly recommends this book, and thank Edelweiss for the opportunity.

This was a hard book for me to rate. It was a really engaging book, and I had so many emotions (especially with the sisters' relationship and their relationship with their grandma). Throughout the book, though, I felt myself growing irritated by the books' romantic view/portrayal of sexual relations outside of marriage. There was not one thing exactly and it could have been worse (I thought one sister would pursue a relationship with someone who was unhappily married while she herself was engaged and the book didn't go there, nor did it have any steamy scenes). But, it still tainted my personal experience with the book.
Not my favorite book … but it was a nice story ! I love the ending the last few chapters were what I was wanting out of the entire book ! Some parts seemed to loose me a bit but over all not a bad read!
Two very different sisters Clara and Maddy are sent to Europe to fulfil their dying grandmothers last wishes in 1938. Europe is on the brink of a war and the sisters, who barely speak to each other have ot work together to deliver a series of letters.
Really good poolside listening.

Loved this book and looked forward to picking it up whenever I had to put it down. The setting is pre-WWII (1937). Estranged sisters, Clara and Maddie, are sent on a journey throughout Europe to fulfill their grandmother’s dying wish: to deliver three letters—her goodbyes—to three meaningful people in her past. Shocking truths emerge that ultimately affects the sister’s relationships.
The settings are all beautifully detailed as Clara and Maddie reach their destinations via the original Queen Mary and the luxurious Orient Express. The reader gets to explore Paris, Venice, and Vienna, through their eyes, as well as meet interesting characters: the recipients of the letters. Upon their return, you get to know a little history about the fateful Hindenburg.
The characters are realistic and well developed. I could relate to them on so many levels. The sisters are complete opposites: Clara is reserved, dutiful, organized, proper, and at times rigid. Her sister, Maddie, is outgoing, daring, spontaneous, and breaks boundaries without a care of bucking societal norms. The story is told from each of their POV, and occasionally the grandmother’s too.
I highly recommend this book. I look forward to reading more from these dual authors.
Content: (L) Mild. A couple uses of damn and hell. (S) No sex. (V) Mild.
