Let me say that I have read all of DK's books, actually I also own all of them, and am a died in the wool fan. Even when a book of his is not up to par with his best, I enjoy reading his descriptive prose. This book pushed the limits of both likeability and readability.
Having recently finished "Micro" by Micheal Crichton, I was disappointed to see a similar theme in this novel. Having recently finished "11/22/63" by Stephen King I was expecting at least as good of a tale of time travel. And having read "What The Night Knows" by Koontz, was a little surprised to see the repeat of a time warp story.
Dean Koontz has the ability to keep a reader on the edge of their seat and turning pages as fast as one can read, as in "Mr. Murder" or "Intensity". This book not only had no surprises, but as some have reviewed, it was a chore to read through. At least in this novel it seems as though DK got caught up more in description than in plot. As soon as I realized the cause of the "mystery", my wife heard a loud groan from me.
Not every book by an author can be their best but let's just hope the next one is at least better than this one!

This book was just the worst. Don’t remember it at all, my eyes kinda glazed over halfway through and I was just flipping pages- spidermonster, time warp, ridiculous character fighting predator, nonsense nonsense nonsense. It was like an awful Stephen king novel- kings novels follow a certain degree of logic, they build slowly and create the universe organically. Koontz be like “old building. Haunted time warp. Demons. Don’t ask just do.” Blah, could waste words on the just absolute ridiculous characters but why bother. Bad enough where idk if koontz deserves reading.

The only thing scary about this book is how incredibly boring it is.

I am very torn about what I think of this book. Sometimes it was almost painful to read this book but then by the end the story was beautifully put together and it all made sense. I give the beginning and the end of the book 4 stars but the middle only 2 stars.

So far this is a bit slow. I'm a big Koontz fan but this one hasn't held my attention.

There are several reviews for this book that state that this is a return of the "Koontz of old". A return to the days when he wrote about haunted houses, truly scary monsters made from bad lab experiments, sci-fi nanotechnology gone bad, sci-fi time travel to times with horrific creatures that boggle the imagination, and children characters with mental or physical disabilities they have to overcome to save the day. Unfortunately, Koontz decides to put each and every one of the aforementioned ideas into this story and the result is a bit of a mess.
I still enjoy Koontz's writing (although I do tend to have to use the "look up word" option on my Nook a bit more than with other authors...he likes them fancy words!), and he does a great job of creating several interesting characters and building up suspense. However, in the end, it's the plot that counts and I felt this one had a bit too much going on to give it more than just an "it was o.k.".

I liked it, but found the writing to be less than stellar. One of the characters was so unbelievable and the entire premise was a a bit disappointing. Entertaining enough to pass the time.
