I cried a lot, and I felt seen. Also laughed a bit too. It was cathartic and validating and heart wrenching.

This book broke my heart. It’s a lovely way of connecting with others that have experienced pet loss.

5★: CHANGED MY THINKING ABOUT A FEW THINGS. I never really thought about the power we humans have with our pets that we don’t have with our fellow humans with regard to end-of-life decisions. And this author actually provided helpful guidance for when to put down a pet (since our pets can’t communicate their last wishes) — to ask whether the pet can still do its three favorite things. Of course when I told a certain human this, they asked if I was going to put them down the same way lol. There was also surprising info on the toll that animal euthanasia takes on veterinarians. And global and historical perspectives on our love of pets. I highly recommend this book to all animal lovers and pet “owners.” Published in August of 2022, Good Grief currently has a 4.28-star average by 361 people.

Predictably, I loved this book. I was a little hesitant to read it at first because I was worried it would be too sad, but E.B. did a great job of balancing the emotion with fascinating facts and light humor. I learned a lot from this book and only cried twice! My dog also got some extra pets because he is a good boy and the very best. This is a must-read for anyone who has a pet.

A must-read for anyone who’s ever had a pet, tbh. But especially for anyone who’s ever lost a pet 💙 You’ll feel seen, embraced, and supported during every chapter of this book—and you’ll probably come out of every chapter learning something new about pets (alive or deceased).

My childhood cat passed away recently, and I checked out this book in hopes that it would help me work through some of my grief. I didn't end up reading it until nearly three months after she passed, but I'm so glad I finally did. It made me feel not so alone in my grief, and comforted that so many people all around the world experienced the same kind of heartbreak I have. I enjoyed hearing about all of Bartels critters she has lived with over the years, as well as stories from all of the people she interviewed. Highly recommend if you're experiencing pet loss or anticipate it happening soon.

This book really helped me with the loss of my corgi. The line about an empty LL Bean bed had me sobbing for 10 minutes. I will make my way to St. Jay’s to visit the dog chapel now
