Raskolnikov is a man that one day commits two violent and senseless murders.  He thinks that he is above the law and no one suspects that he could be the one who has done it, but as time goes on he is feeling the need to let others know of what he has done.

This classic was on my big poster of 100 books to read.  I've discovered that I actually enjoy the Russian novels around this time period.  I think that a big part of it has to do with the fact that I am reading translations of the books, so the language is a bit more current.  I read the Oliver Ready translation.  All of these books are too long for me and I'm going to assume that they were paid by the page during this time, haha.  This book was a bit more gruesome than I was expecting and there is little punishment in the novel.  Oh, it was also hard for me to keep track of the names of people and who was who.

I’m thoroughly convinced people only say they like this book because they’re supposed to like this book because it’s considered a classic and liking Dostoevsky is some kind of fucking cool club of pretentious drivel.
It should be enough that it’s SO fucking antisemitic. That’s more than enough reason to hate it. But it’s also just terribly written, especially the dialogue. It’s so fucking bad lol.
Examples:

“you won’t be offended, my dear, that I keep pacing back and forth like this; excuse me, my dear, I’m so afraid of offending you, but it’s simply necessary for me to move, sir. I sit all the time, and I’m so glad to be able to walk around for five minutes or so… hemorrhoids, sir…” (wtf?!)

“… and for me, personally, it began by accident, a quite accidental accident, something which in the highest degree might or might not have happened - and what was it? Hm, I think there’s no need to say.” WTF?!?!

Also annoyed by the constant: Ha, ha, ha! Hem, hem!
Damn this book should be a crime and ‘twas a punishment to be read!!!!!
(Only tacked on an extra star cuz there were like 2 or 3 moments where a certain really fascinating passage made me think “oh, ok, I get it” - but then it would pretty soon return to pissing me the fuck off)
