Lewis hits on the core difference in our society and our government. The rift is less about Democrats and Republicans, Evangelicals and other religious groups and more about the rift between those who value the mission of America and those who value money.

This is a book about heroes. This is a book about dedication and how fragile it’s setting. I thought I had a fairly good idea about the different departments of the Federal Government. I have been shown how little I do know. This easily readable book should be required of everyone. You will be amazed by the various heroes who are keeping us safe, healthy, and productive. Lewis’s books about financial markets & baseball sabermetrics became blockbuster films. But can even he make government infrastructure exciting? Slim & fast-moving, 5th touches on how Trump was jaw-droppingly unprepared to run the fed. But it’s really a love letter to 3 departments (energy, agriculture & commerce) & the smart career folks who do everything from predict tornados to find people lost at sea. Trump incompetence is fun, but it already feels outdated. The rest is sweet but small. This is Lewis in a minor key. I don’t see a movie here. Brad Pitt as Chris Christie?

“A pair of 4-megaton hydrogen bombs, each more than 250 times more powerful than the bomb that destroyed Hiroshima, broke off a damaged B-52 over North Carolina. One of the bombs disintegrated upon impact, but the other floated down beneath its parachute and armed itself. It was later found in a field outside Goldsboro, North Carolina, with three of its four safety mechanisms tripped or rendered ineffective by the plane’s breakup. Had the fourth switch flipped, a vast section of eastern North Carolina would have been destroyed, and nuclear fallout might have descended on Washington, DC, and New York City.”
