As expected in a Palahniuk novel, it is humorous yet has an underlying dark theme. The twists and turns are somewhat not laid out properly, but I enjoyed that we get a glimpse of what the characters think and have to say. The porn titles alone are so funny.

I love Chuck Palahniuk, but this might be among the worst books I've ever read. Maybe it's also that I don't like to read five billion clever euphemisms for masturbation when I'm riding the subway to work first thing in the morning. Lots of this book just really grossed me out, and not in an envelope-pushing way. Palahniuk still gets one star, however, for knowing a surprising amount of feminist theory (he's apparently read his Ariel Levy) and for some compelling research (who knew that Hitler invented the blow-up doll?)
It's finally happened, I've become disenchanted by Chuck Palahniuk. Where most of his previous novels (barring Haunted) possessed some unifying purpose underlying all the gore, sexuality, and absurdity, Snuff just seems to be one bizarre piece of information after another with only a flimsy and predictable plot to keep the reader interested. He's proven continuously that he can come up with unique synopses and characters, but that's about as far as he manages to get with Snuff. Where is the content? Where is the meaning? Where is the inspired social commentary that takes the gratuitous beyond simple indulgence? The only things I came away with from the experience of reading this book was a handful of useless trivia and a confirmation of the all-too-obvious fact that pornography, both the industry and the subculture created by it, are ridiculous. Tell me something I don't know, Chuck!
I just have too much going on rn to properly devote time to this book
This was solidly stuck between a 2- and a 3-star experience, but instead of opting to write a longer review touching more on what Palahniuk might have done with the book, I'm bumping it up to 3 stars and using that half-star raise to excuse myself from a long review. You read enough Chuck and it all starts to feel like a formula. He's like the Tarantino of transgressive novels. Chooses edgy subject matter, highlights contradictions inherent in contemporary life and capitalism, digresses every 8 pages into pop culture and science trivia that no one knows, ... it just starts to feel more like a schtick from which he's squeezed every last bit of literary juice. If you haven't read much of his work, you might get a kick out of most of this, but it starts to wear thin after a while despite a lot of humor, pathos, and poignant social commentary. I think this might be the last of his work I read. I will say, it's no small thing to pull off two-hundred pages essentially centered around 3 of the 600 guys waiting backstage to be part of a record-breaking porn filming. Maybe it's more that individual parts were quite effective, but the whole felt somewhat mashed together. I did read it in one day so I must have been mostly entertained...
