Sing, Unburied, Sing

I just finished reading Children of Blood and Bone, so the straight up comparison is inevitable, and this book is vastly superior. Both ostensibly show the consequences of a group of people who have to live with the burden of a history of poverty and oppression, but Ward's book does it with nuance and portraits of real, believable people, which Children uses a really heavy-handed approach involving one-dimensional characters and a whole series of violent clashes. If you're only going to read one, read this one. You will sympathize with these characters much more thoroughly!

I feel like I’m in the minority here but maybe I just struggled with how much I hated Leonie! Every one of her chapters had me fighting for my life. I also didn’t like the Richie chapters and the ending with him and given was a giant let down! The story was good and the prose were amazing, but the ghosts… not so much.

Wow, that's Southern Gothic alright... haunting in all senses, immersive setting, character-driven in a way that pulls you under. descriptions were vivid and thematic but at times maybe heavy-handed.

This was such a poetic book, full of imagery and deep feeling. I have marked the other two books in this series to read and enjoyed how this was able to stand alone. Really beautiful and heartfelt.

Exploring the side of humanity that is raw and gritty. It captures what it feels like to live and be a part of a less than perfect family but still find your way in this confusing existence.
